My mum used to say, “Get up, put your mascara on, and get on with it.” Yours might look different. Maybe it’s washing your hair. Maybe it’s a shower — and for what it’s worth, I genuinely recommend starting every day with one. Not just for the obvious reasons, but to wash off the day before. Start clean. Start fresh. The point isn’t the mascara. It’s the choice to love yourself enough to show up, and to live the life you actually have, as fully as you can.
I started in beauty therapy, worked as a makeup artist, and went back to study hairdressing when my youngest was one. I spent twenty years as the strategic mind behind a recruitment business — not always the loudest in the room, but the one who understood people, patterns, and the long game. I’m divorced. I still co-parent two kids who are now 18 and 20, and we do it as friends. I lost my mum at 26 and my best friend of 40 years recently. Life has handed me some weight. I’m not sharing that for sympathy — I’m sharing it so you know I’m not talking from a whiteboard.
Here’s what I know for certain: no therapist, no NLP session, no hypnotherapy course is going to heal you. They’re just that. Tools. You are the only one who can do the actual healing. It happens in the wee moments, every single day, that most people overlook. The small choices that don’t feel significant until one morning you realise you’re standing differently.
My brain has always been full of ideas. For years I’d get so overwhelmed by all of them that I’d end up completely frozen — and honestly? I just thought I was lazy. I’m not lazy. I never was. I just didn’t have the right framework to move from thinking to doing. That’s a very different problem, and it has a very different solution.
And here’s the question underneath all of it: if you don’t know who you actually are at your core, how do you know what’s right for you? How do you filter the noise? How do you choose?
That’s the work. Not a total overhaul. Not another course. Just getting clear on who you are — and then taking the next small, intentional step toward her.
